PET OF THE MONTH JUNE 2008

"Willie" Burr

"Willie", this small 11 pound Maltese went from being abandoned in a shelter to being famous as Pet of the Month. "Willie's" story begins sadly with being turned into a shelter at 11 years old. Just when he entered his senior years and needed a family the most they turned him into the pound. The staff at the shelter knew very little about his life or past and wrote a note on his cage sign that said "Likes to eat popcorn and watch movies". The New Beginnings, Pet Finders adoption group of dedicated volunteers saw him one day and rescued "Willie" out of the pound. They placed an article on the web site and I found him. I was very lucky to have such an angel and adopted him immediately. He now has been in his new home for a little over one year. He adapted very quickly and it feels like he has been there for years. Every time I come in the front door from work he wags his tail and rolls over. His eyes light up when you call his name. He can be classified as a senior and has a few special medical needs. He is diabetic and receives insulin twice a day. Long walks and string beans as treats are a few of the healthy changes we have made. Everyone at Brick Town Veterinary Hospital knows him and takes such great care of him. Don't ever be afraid to give a senior dog a second chance and a good home. "Willie" is the kindest and cutest soul on four legs.

PET OF THE May 2008

"Abby" Taylor

Abigail "Abby" taylor was born October 1, 2001. She was born in North Carolina but is lucky enough to now live in New Jersey.  She loves the beach which she goes to almost every day, and her very favorite thing to do is sit in her hot tub with her mom and dad-Jimmy and Hilarie Taylor. She loves to sit on a raft with a baseball cap and sunglasses on and can do this for hours until she gets "stuck"- staring at the wall of the pool.  Then she has to be "rescued" and pushed back to the middle of the pool for more hours of relaxation. She enjoys boat rides and car rides and pretty much whatever her mom and dad are doing.  She does not like being left alone and does not like brussel sprouts.  Other than that- it's abby's world and she is happy to just "be".

PET OF THE MONTH April 2008

"Titus" Tyler

Titus is a 9 year old golden retriever, who our son, Nick, was so lucky to receive 7 years ago from Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). Nick has severe quadriplegic cerebral palsy, and uses a wheelchair to get around. We had been wanting to get Nick a dog for a companion, but we were hesitant because he has very limited physical control of his arms and legs, cannot speak clearly, and would get extremely startled from loud noises (such as a dog barking). Then we found out about CCI, who provides highly-trained dogs to people with physical disabilities to assist them both physically and emotionally. In August of 2000, Nick, myself and my husband graduated from an intensive 2 week course at CCI in Farmingdale, Long Island, with the most wonderful Skilled Companion Dog in the world, Titus. This was shortly before Nick turned 8; he is now 15 and he and Titus have been through so much together. Nick has been through many types of physical therapies in his life, but I always say that Titus has been the best “therapy” that we have found for him. He has made Nick’s life so much happier, and he accepts Nick for exactly who he is. As a Skilled Companion, Titus has been trained to do such things as pick up dropped items and push open a door, but most importantly for Nick is that he is an extremely gentle companion that walks proudly next to Nick’s wheelchair where ever we go with him. Titus accompanies Nick to places such as restaurants, hotels, and stores, and their favorite place to go together is to NJ Devils games. Instead of people staring at Nick the way they used to, they now smile warmly at him and compliment him on his wonderful dog. We are so very grateful that Titus came into our lives, and for Canine Companions for Independence making it possible.

PETS OF THE MONTH March 2008

"China", "Brillo" & "Jazz" Haynes

China's other family loved her but with two small children & China loosing her sight they had trouble caring for her. They were willing to give her to someone who would take care of her. We met China's family in mid-Pennsylvania and took possession of our beautiful little China on December 1st, a Sunday. She already had an appointment with Dr. Conway for Monday morning and with Dr. Lackner, an ophthamologist at Garden State Veterinary Specialists on Tuesday. On January 2, 2003, China had cataract surgery and now she can see. What a marvel to watch her rediscover the world. She and our Miniature Schnauzer Max became good friends. Our Brillo was adopted from a rescue group by a young couple then returned when a human baby arrived. A friend who worked with the group called us. We decided that he was meant to be ours. Our friend took him home and kept him until our daughter could bring him to us. He is an absolute delight. At 7 years old he is still a puppy at heart. He and Max became constant playmates and we enjoyed our three "pups". In 2005 our Max died. We decided that the best memorial we could provide for our Max was to find a Miniature Schnauzer that needed help and adopt it. Little we knew where this would lead. Several internet searches led to another Miniature Schnauzer with cataracts being cared for by a rescue group. The only problem was the group was in Nashville, TN. On May 18, 2005, Gladys boarded an early flight with a small carry on and and empty dog crate. Later that day, Jazz became a part of our lives. After arriving in NJ in pouring rain, he quickly settled in. Soon after, he got his eyes "fixed". Again it is an absolute joy to watch him grow into his eyes. Everyone who knows our family knows that the three "pups", China, Brillo & Jazz are a very important part of our family. Our thanks to the staff at Brick Town Veterinary Hospital for helping us keep them healthy and for putting up with their antics.

PET OF THE MONTH February 2008

"Sara" Mancini

Sara is our 5 year old Golden Retriever. She has always been very friendly and loves to play with anyone at anytime. She loves to play frisbee, fetch balls, sticks and anything that weighs enough for her to carry in her mouth. Last Fall, Sara was diagnosed with a form of cancer known as Lymphoma by Dr. Christman and we feared for the worst. She started receiving chemotheraphy at Brick Town Veterinary, along with taking a lot of different vitamins. For the last six months she has stuck with this daily routine and we've watched as she's progressed so incredibly well. Thanks to everyones efforts, our Sara is now looking at a clean bill of health and back to her old self. Sara is greeting everyone who comes to our door with her usual leap into their arms and a mess of big kisses. She rolls on the floor and groans for more petting from anyone who sees her. Sara is honestly the most friendliest, lovable dog we've ever owned and we are so very thankful she will be with us much longer than it had looked many months ago.

PET OF THE MONTH January 2008

"Cassy" Salvatore

Cassy is a wonderful dog who loves to follow us all around the house.  She demands to be walked at least twice a day. If you don't feed her she will remind you and can smell food a mile away.  She loves to cuddle up on the bed and get her belly rubbed. The neighborhood kids love to watch her do tricks for them like sit, speak, lay down roll over and play dead. When we take her to the dog park she runs and plays with her best friends Daisy and Andy Skillman. She's an excellent watch dog who barks whenever someone comes up to the house. Seven months ago we found out that Cassy was way over her optimal weight of ninety pounds.  We had to stop giving her excessive treats and actually increased her food from two cups a day to 3 1/2 cups a day. She was also started on Slentrol under the direction of Dr. Weiss. Slentrol is a new diet medicine just for Dogs. We were very excited and proud (and so was Dr. Weiss) when she lost 28 pounds. She took the lead in the "Biggest Loser" contest at Brick Town Vets this year and won a year's worth of heartworm medicine.  Now she's pet of the month and trying hard to maintain her girlish figure with exercise and good eating habits. Everyone loves Cassy and she's quite affectionate giving sloppy puppy kisses and giant puppy hugs to everyone she meets. We hope the next ten dogs we get should be as good as her. That would be just fine!

Betty Salvatore

CONGRATULATIONS to "Cassy" and The Salvatore family for your hard work & dedication towards helping "Cassy" attaining her goal weight so she will remain fit and healthy!!

Sincerely, Dr. Weiss, Dr. Christman and all the staff of Bricktown Veterinary Hospital.

PET OF THE MONTH December 2007

"Brandy" & "Abbi" Matteucci

Brandy is our black Miniature Schnauzer who came to us from Iowa, born August 15, 2000. Abbi is also a salt & pepper Miniature Schnauzer who came to us from Yuma, Az, born December 31, 2003.
We were a little worried when Abbi first came to us because Brandy didn't want anything to do with her the 1st few days. They now get along but Brandy let's Abbi know that she is still top dog in the family. They have their own beds but of course they sleep on the furniture. Brandy loves to be held all the time. She will go to mom to be picked up & sits with her head on moms shoulder just like a baby. Abbi thinks everything in the house should be chewed. She loves cough drops, toilet paper, tissues & most of all she just ate our poinsettia that we saved from last year. She loves to bark at everything that moves but she will run if you go after her. She loves going to see Dr. Adam & the rest of the staff as everyone pays so much attention to her. Brandy is the good girl who doesn't chew but she has developed diabetes. she takes her needles like a trooper twice a day. At our last visit Dr. Adam noticed that she is now starting to loose her sight. We never knew what showing of love two dogs could give but these girls just jump all over us every time we come home. The girls would like to thank everyone from Brick Town Veterinary Hospital for all their kindness & wish everyone a  Happy Holiday.

PET OF THE MONTH November 2007

"Rusty" Wolf

Rusty came to us by way of the Northern Ocean County Animal Shelter. He was a surrender dog of between 4 1/2 & 5 1/2 months old. We took him home with us in April 2006 and he has been everything we expected. We love him to death & he is completely spoiled.

Unfortunately, I neglected to watch him closely this spring in front of our house & he was hit by a hit & run driver. He laid with blood coming out of his ears near death. We rushed him to Dr. Christman and after stabilization rushed him up to Garden State Veterinary Services in Tinton Falls. He remained there for 5 days where he was treated for brain trauma & lost the use of his right eye & left paw. The paw was bandaged for 3 months than after several meetings with Dr. Christman & his associates the left leg was amputated. He is now recouperating and doing very well thankfully to all the staff of Brick Town Veterinary Hospital especially Dr. Christman.

We love Rusty to death as he sleeps in our bed every night. GOD is good!!!

PET OF THE MONTH October 2007

"Max" & "Oji"

One of Max & Oji's favorite visiting spots is Brick Town Veterinary Hospital. They are the ones pawing to get IN to see Aunt Janet or Aunt Val and Uncle David (Dr. Buist) or Uncle Adam (Dr. Christman) along with many of their other "best" friends at BTVH. Max (aka The White One) is 15 & Oji-which means Prince in Japanese (aka The Black One) is 14. They are the best of buddies and are inseparable. They think everyone on this planet was put here to love, pet and if they have their way, to give them treats. They both have limited vision, Max has serious kidney problems & Oji is an insulin dependant diabetic but they certainly don't let that stop them from enjoying time laying on the deck or roaming the back yard, especially when it is cold and windy. One of their favorites things to do is snuggle up butt to butt while they are sleeping. Oh does Oji snore, causing my friends to compare him to their spouses!!!!! Max and my semi feral cat named Meow, who sleeps in my crawlspace tolerate each other beautifully, HOWEVER, Oji just has to think CAT and they will try to out stare each other until one of them gives in and then the barking begins. "The Boys" as they are known by many are my precious, lovable and loving babies who I hope give each of you who are visiting the website a big smile for your day.

WOOF WOOF = THANK YOU for selecting us, "Max" & "Oji" as October Pet's of the Month

PET OF THE MONTH   September 2007

"Hugo Paul"

Hugo, along with Jane and Tiger came from the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter in June 1998. They were all sharing the lobby's window display and were inseparable. Hugo was taken to Brick Town Vet for his initial checkup with Dr. Buist where he was diagnosed with FIV, the cat version of AIDS. Despite the diagnosis, Hugo is still doing very well years later. Often acting like a little kitten, Hugo loves to be mischievous. His other hobbies are chasing squirrels, sunbathing on the deck and watching TV. He purrs non-stop when he goes to the vet, especially during his checkups. To be able to listen to his lungs the staff has to turn on the water faucet which distracts him from purring. The quiet doesn't last for long. Afterwards he hugs the staff and purrs in the car going home.

August 2007

"PAN TIERNEY"

I’m a “rescue” Italian Greyhound (also called an IG or Iggy). My family adopted me through the IGCA rescue organization (all volunteers) that takes in surrendered/stray Iggies and works to re-home them.

My first owners paid a lot of money for me because I came with “papers”. They thought I was cute when they saw me in the pet shop but they got tired of me after a couple of months because they didn’t have the patience to housebreak me. They surrendered me to IG Rescue and I went to a “foster” home until the Rescue people could find a Forever Home for me. When I was 9 months old I was adopted. I’ll turn 4 years old on Mischief night. I live with two other Iggies, a whippet and a cat, all of whom are also “rescues”. My mom and dad became volunteers with IG Rescue and have fostered a number of Iggies since I was adopted. I help my foster siblings
learn how to live harmoniously with other pets and how to handle doggie hygiene so they can go to a loving Forever Home of their very own.

Anyone who is interested in adopting a “rescue” of any kind, a good place to start is at that breed’s website where you’ll find a link to their Rescue page.

JULY 2007

"Kaden"

Kaden is Brick Township Police Department's newest German Shepard K-9.

Kaden is a 17 month old German Shepard. He was born in Czechoslovakia and came to the United States when he was about 9 months old.

Kaden is a graduate of the New Jersey State Police Patrol Class #7. While in school he learned how to apprehend criminals, search buildings for people, track people, search open areas for evidence, agility (which includes jumping fences, jumping through windows and climbing ladders) and obedience.

Currently, Kaden is attending the NJ State Police Scent Class #21. In scent school, Kaden is learning how to search for and find narcotics. Currently Kaden can locate marijuana, cocaine, crack, hash oil, heroin, methamphetamine and ecstasy. Kaden will be graduating from scent school on July 13, 2007.

After graduation, Kaden will be working in Brick Township from 7pm to 3am. However, Kaden gets called out at all hours of the day and night if his services are needed.

So far Kaden has been used for tracking, officer protection and building searches. During one of his tracks he located a knife which was left in the woods by a suicidal subject. The subject who turned himself into the police, couldn't remember where he threw the knife. The police were concerned that children may find the knife in the woods; kaden was called out and tacked the path the subject took into the woods and put his nose right on the knife.

"Hope" Benedetto

Since the 1980's, organizations have worked to place retired racing greyhounds in homes as family pets.

"Hope" is a 4 & 1/2 year old former racer. She is a wonderful ambassador for the breed because of her sweet personality. It didn't take her long to learn to enjoy retirement. Life is good, with long walks, squeaky toys, a huge comfy bed and lots of love and attention.

There are currently many lovable greyhounds waiting for adoption. "Hope's" person Michelle is grateful to have been rescued by "Hope"!! Our thanks to Brick Town Veterinary Hospital for keeping her healthy and happy.

April 2007

"Mindy" Piserchia

Mindy was found at a body shop in Nutley, NJ in 1990. Thinking I could bring her to to the vets office in E. Hanover to be spayed then returned to the body shop turned out to be a twist of fate. The vet discovered she had an upper respiratory infection and could not be spayed until she was better. Mindy had to come home with me for proper nutrition, love and medicine. Well, that was 17 years ago and I never thought having a cat would bring so much love and happiness. Mindy was my first rescued cat which brought me into what I do today...RESCUE ANIMALS. This is how it all began. I placed her in my bedroom to recover and she became part of my pillow leading her to be a strong influence in my life. Of course over the years she has medical problems but with the help and continued support of Dr. Adam Christman and Brick Town Veterinary Hospital, I hope and pray Mindy can continue to thrive, as I love her to pieces. Mindy is proud and honored to have been chosen "Pet of the Month", with many thanks to Brick Town Veterinary Hospital and their staff of wonderful people for recognizing just how special MINDY is to me.

March 2007

"Sassy" Orlando

Sassy was found abandoned (at less than 4 weeks old) along with two of her siblings in a box by a restaurant dumpster. Thanks to her loud "meowing", obvious spunk, adorable little face and beautiful markings she was saved by her Aunt Dee and brought to a safe, loving home. At first she seemed like a normal mischievous little furball getting into anything and everything and constantly meowing for attention. Then at 3 months old she developed head tremors and a wobbly stumbling walk which changed to walking on her elbows and then inability to walk without falling over and struggling to get up. Dr. DiAngelis diagnosed her with cerebellar hypoplasia (a viral infection passed on from her mother) and assured us that cats do learn to compensate with the disease. A specialist was consulted who recommend we put Sassy down. Her diagnosis totally devistated us because at that point Sassy was a part of the family. The specialists recommendation was immediately discarded as "not an option"! Now 3 years later, despite her disability, with a lot of extra love, care and pampering she manages to get around and is a happy affectionate and absoluetly spoiled cat that amazes us daily. Sassy is proud to accept "Pet of the Month" with many thanks to her great doctors and the staff at Brick Town Veterinary Hospital for recognizing just how special she truly is!

February 2007

"Sadie Blaze" Grandinetti

Sadie Blaze (black dog) was born on 11/4/94, one of 8 puppies born at home to mama "Passion"(white dog). Her tentative name was Blaze for the white marking on her head and nose. On her first visit to Bricktown Veterinary Hospital, the office staff helped with a list of potenial names, coming up with Sadie Blaze. From the day she was born, Sadie Blaze has never been away from her mother until Passion died on 09/25/2006. Over my lifetime of having 9 dogs, I 've learned that each have their own special characteristics. Sadie Blaze is the first to follow me where ever I go, inside or outside. Thank You for choosing my loving companion as your pet of the month.

Mr. Grandinetti

  January 2007

"Henry" Kobus

On a cold, rainy November day in 1994, 3 women working at the State Capitol coaxed a shy, stray mutt into the State House. She had been hanging around for months. Knowing my beloved dog recently passed away, my co-workers asked if I would take this timid creature home. I named her Lady. Five days later, Lady surprised me with the birth of 6 puppies. Henry was the first to be born. "Hem" as I am fond of calling him always knows when I need comfort. He sticks close by when I am sick or emotionally hurting, offering up a furry paw or gentle nose. He patiently endures a human mom with a penchant for photography. His picture has been taken wearing all sorts of silly hats, costumes and props. He recently won a Scooby-Doo Halloween Contest, being selected in the top 133 of 1,500 entries. Now 12, Hem is a survivor of a cancerous tumor on his tail. He's survived a serious bout with lyme disease, that seems to magnify the stiffness and aches of an old dog. A typical old man, he sometimes balks at taking his medicines, even when I disguise them with bread or cheese. In spite of his age and his ailments, "Hem" still finds a way to greet me each morning with a cheerfully wagging tail. He'll grab his squeaky ball with the intention to play. He'll lick his chops when I fix his breakfast and roll on his back so I can scratch his belly. It's not hard to see that he's happy for each new day. He came into our house so unexpectedly, and has touched our lives so deeply, carving a special place in our hearts where he will live forever.

   December 2006

"Quest" Keenan

Quest is a 4 year old German Shepherd. She is a Search & Recovery K-9 Certified in Tracking & Human Remains Detection. Quest assisted in the search for Jersey City Police Officer Robert Nguyen, December 29, 2005. She was able to pinpoint an area for NYPD divers to search and they were able to recover his body. Because of this search, Quest received The American Kennel Clubs Honorable Mention "ACE" Award for Canine Excellence in the Search & Rescue category. Quest is wearing the Bronze Medallion in the photo.

  November 2006

"Dusty & Sam" Clifford

Dusty (Siberian Husky) & Sam (Yellow Lab) are very busy Pet Therapy dogs. They visit hospitals, nursing homes, schools and the library. Dusty loves to go for car rides and naps while Sam loves to play and swim. Most of all, they are best friends.

October 2006

"Kelsie" Dorry

The most frequent thing Kelsie hears when we are out is Lo Quiero Taco Bell? NO, he is not a Chihuahua but an 8lb. red Miniature Pinscher! Kelsie is now 4 years old and is not only a Pet Therapy dog visiting a local nursing home and hospital but he is also a Service Dog. He loves playing soccer, attacking plastic soda bottles and is able to pour water into his bowl. He also rolls dice, rings a hotel bell, picks up trash and is currently learning to play piano!   You can see more of me at www.kelsietheminpin.com
